May 14, 2012

Last Friday, Facebook announced proposed changes to their Data Use Policy. The goal of the changes is to create a more transparent guide on how Facebook uses the data of its users. First off, always be suspicious of special offers that require you to like multiple items. Also, requiring you to share posts on your Facebook wall is a favorite trick of the scammers. This is how the scam is spread very rapidly on Facebook. Think before you click, so you aren’t willingly spreading scams and spam on Facebook.

When Disaster Strikes, New Facebook Feature Will Let You Mark Yourself as “Safe”
MARCH 2, 2012
This is not a scam, but for real!

Natural and manmade disasters are just part of the human experience. Social media has proven time and time again to be an invaluable asset in times of calamity and crisis. It is a great way for authorities to spread warnings and alerts, and it has become an unofficial communication platform for families and friends.

Facebook is testing a new feature that lets you mark yourself as ‘Safe’ when disaster strikes. Users would receive a reminder in their News Feed to mark themselves as ‘Safe’. You would also have the ability to mark other friends as ‘Safe” and add details about your current location and contact information.

In the wake of the Fukushima disaster, this Facebook feature is currently being tested in Japan, but hopefully it will be rolled out to all users soon.

When Disaster Strikes, New Facebook Feature Will Let You Mark Yourself as “Safe”
MARCH 2, 2012

Tensions have been high all day. I live in a tornado prone area, and we have been under severe weather alerts this afternoon and evening. Several areas of the United States have been ravaged by tornadoes this past year. In January, houses were leveled less than three miles from where I live.

Natural and manmade disasters are just part of the human experience. Social media has proven time and time again to be an invaluable asset in times of calamity and crisis. It is a great way for authorities to spread warnings and alerts, and it has become an unofficial communication platform for families and friends. When tornadoes ripped through Alabama in April of last year, a Facebook group quickly formed that helped restore lost items to their rightful owners. The storms literally picked up and dropped items hundreds of miles from their original location.

How Social Media and Mobile Behaviors Can Increase Your Risk of Identity Fraud
MARCH 1, 2012

According to Javelin Strategy & Research, the rate of Identity Fraud increased by 13 percent in 2011. Over 11.6 million adults were victimized in the United States.

On a positive note, the dollar amount stolen remained constant. James Van Dyke, president and founder of Javelin Strategy & Research, attributes this to consumers, the financial services industry, law enforcement and government agencies stopping fraud earlier and making new account fraud more difficult to perpetrate.

Strawberry Quick Meth Warning
FEBRUARY 28, 2012

“ALL PARENTS PLEEEASE BE AWARE!! …There is a drug going around the schools …Its known as Strawberry Quick …or strawberry meth …it looks like pop rocks kids eat & also smells like strawberries & also comes in other flavors like chocolate ect … Pleeease tell your children not to take candy from anyone even a class mate because this drug that looks like pop rocks is actually crystal meth rocked up with strawberry flavor & can kill them :’( …PLEASE REPOST!!! so all parents are aware of this …Thank You! This is happening all over the country”

Now, some Facebook warnings have no basis in fact and are completely fabricated or used to intentionally spread misinformation. Others have just enough truth thrown into the mix, and that can further confuse the masses. Other warnings fall into the realm of the hypothetical – technically, the crux of the warning could happen; therefore, some people will warn as many people about it as they possibly can.

Never complete surveys to unlock videos or other content on Facebook. Scammers use these tricks to either spread malware, obtain personal identification or earn commissions from marketing companies. Don’t pad their pocket and possibly open yourself up to harm!

A study of 1.4 million Facebook users shows a sharp rise in protecting personal information.
FEBRUARY 19, 2012

The most notable statistic was the number of users choosing to hide their friend list. This figure rose over 200% during the 15-month period of the study. Further analysis revealed that women and higher income users were more apt to have stricter privacy settings.

Coca Cola Giveaway ( 24 Pack Limited Offer )

Fake EventClicking the wall post link takes you to a bogus Facebook Event page. Clicking the link on the page redirects you to yet another fake Facebook event page. Here is where the shenanigans come into play. You are required to join the event, and invite your friends – notice the more people you invite the more Coke you get. 150,000 reasons why you should not share with ‘Friends of Friends’ on Facebook
FEBRUARY 6, 2012

Ok, that might be overstated just a bit. Considering the average Facebook user in a recent survey by The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project had 245 Facebook friends, we can knock it down to 149,755 reasons.

The title of the project is actually, “Why most Facebook users get more than they give,” and the report can be summed up as follows:

“The average Facebook user gets more from their friends on Facebook than they give to their friends. Why? Because of a segment of “power users,” who specialize in different Facebook activities and contribute much more than the typical user does.”

Dad Shoots Daughter’s Laptop over Facebook Rant!
FEBRUARY 10, 2012

Raising children in the Facebook era is certainly no easy task. Apart from the threats of online predators, cyber bullies, hackers, scammers and identity thieves, parents also have to worry about their children posting questionable, outrageous or inappropriate content.

Most teens reluctantly ‘friend’ their parents on Facebook, and then the cat and mouse game begins. Parents try to proactively monitor their social media profiles with varying degrees of success and intrusion – teens try to circumvent parental controls and hide objectionable content.

Here we see a common trick by the scammers – a rogue browser plugin. As with Facebook applications, only install plugins / browser extensions from trusted sources. Based on what we have seen so far, this one doesn’t fit the bill. Installing the plugin leaves your system totally vulnerable to the developer. Similar scams have been known to pack malware and viruses. Installing the plugin is definitely not worth the risk to your system. We decided to stop here and advise you to do the same.

Why you should NOT install ‘Fun & Entertaining’ Facebook applications
JANUARY 26, 2012

Some apps generate an enormous amount of spam and can annoy the heck out of your Facebook friends. Others are outright scams and should be avoided entirely. For example, any application offering to show you who has viewed your profile, who your Facebook stalkers are etc., are guaranteed to be fraudulent. Facebook doesn’t allow developers access to the data required to create apps like this.
